As near as I can tell, there's not any real functionality associated with the whole friends thing - so I probably won't say anything about it one way or the other. That's why I am glad that I am automatically friends with everybody! If they want to do the friending thing with each other, I think that's fine - it's kind of like the way Desire2Learn revealed everybody's email addresses, so if you wanted to email somebody in class, you could - although I'm not sure how often, if ever, people did that. I'm mostly just curious to see if friending networks develop in the class (because they are used to it from Facebook), or whether no friending goes on (because I don't require it - and usually, if I don't require something, it simply does not happen). :-)

hi Mark, I accepted your friend request - the whole "friending" thing on social networks is kind of strange to me (I'll get friend requests from people on networks who have never dialogued with me about anything, which seems weird) - I don't know if you've noticed this yet but, LUCKILY, when you are the admin of a ning you are automatically friends with everybody on that ning, so you don't end up accidentally hurting someone's feelings by not being friends with them... :-)

One more P.S. before I go make some dinner - I'll be glad to make you an admin over at my class ning up until August 18 if you want to see what it's like "behind the curtain" so to speak - I was surprised at how incredibly simple the set-up is. :-)

Hey Mark, super - I'll send you an invite now. I've been using Nings for about a year, but this is my first effort at administering one. I'm feeling very optimistic ... but this is one of the biggest changes I've ever made to my class, so it would be great to have some other folks to share ideas and experiences with.

The week of August 11 is when I will be putting up a LOT of technical notes, since I'll release my classes to the students August 18.

Feel free to email me anytime - I don't always keep an eye on this ning, but if I'm online I do check email pretty regularly.

P.S. The Tech Tips thing are "on the side" from my actual class assignments (e.g., Ning account assignment) - I'm trying to disentangle my tech instructions from my class assignments so that my tech stuff can still be useful to people whose specific class assignments might be quite different from mine. :-)

Hey Mark, I'm not sure if it would be useful to you or not, but I've started posting the tips for using Ning that I'll be using with my students when things get rolling in August -
Ning Technology Tips

I'll be glad to invite you to join my class ning if you're interested in seeing what happens - I'm VERY curious to see what this will be like. It's a totally new experiment for me! :-)

You did a great job of explaining. Melanee's going to jump in there and see if we can answer any of the questions that are floating around. Thanks for including your comments - I think it's really important for developers on campus to hear from someone who's already been through the process.

p.s. I promise we're working diligently on the calendar to roll out asap :)
